Today marks the beginning of Mental Health Awareness Week (also called Mental Illness Awareness Week), which makes this is an opportune time to reflect on the impact that mental illnesses have on our community, to fight the stigma surrounding mental illnesses and to share resources with the people who need them most. One of the most helpful initiatives during the week is National Depression Screening Day.
Here are five things to be aware of during Mental Illness Awareness Week:
National Depression Screening Day began as an initiative to reach individuals across the nation with important mental health education, connect them with support services and help clinicians catch depression symptoms in a patient before they worsen. Making a depression diagnosis early through screening can also prevent complications someone may have from other medical conditions. National Depression Screening Day takes place on thousands of college campuses, at community-based organizations and in military installations across the country each year.
