What does the best physical therapy program include?

Physical, Occupational and Speech therapy can increase the quality of life for someone who has recently suffered from an injury or physical illness. You can improve your mobility with the right combination of planning, effort and guidance from a clinician.

To learn what makes therapy services successful, we spoke with a few of our very own therapists. Here are some of the tips they offered to get the most out of your sessions, whether they are at home or in a medical facility.

Lisa Cheney, Director of Rehabilitation Services

“If you don’t feel like it that day, let us know why. Sometimes you just don’t feel well, or you’ve had flu-like symptoms for 24 hours. We’ll talk with you to figure out how we can make it work and get you the most out of your session. We will always remind you that you’re the captain of your own health care. You’re the driver, and we will help get you to where you want to be.”

Robert Brennan, PT

“The most important thing you can do is trust your clinician. That will help you trust the plan of care and make it easier for clinicians to help you accomplish your goals. A great physical therapist will work hard to earn your trust early in your rehabilitation. They will also always keep your personal goals in mind.”

Thai Saengkheune, PT, OT

“Be open-minded and stay positive about your current situation. It’s not easy, but it makes other steps in the process less challenging. The right mindset builds up your confidence and skills so that you’re able to do things that you couldn’t before. Sometimes, our job is just to provide you with encouragement that you didn’t know you needed. That is even more effective if you have the right attitude.”

Allison Tolnai, PT

“Just try. Everyone has good days and bad days, but as long as you put a little bit of effort in, you’ll be able to get something out of each session and meet goals before you know it.”

“Remember that progress comes in baby steps. If you do one exercise every day, it will make a difference. That’s one more thing you couldn’t have done the previous day.”

As you can see, there are many different things you can do to improve your quality of life thanks to your own effort and the support of great Clinicians.
